Olier, Jean-Jacques

(1608-1657)
   cleric
Known as Monsieur olier, Jean-Jacques olier was born in Paris, where he served as the priest for the church of Saint-Sulpice (1642-52). He reformed his parish and created there a seminary that grew and for which he founded the congregation of priest of Saint-Sulpice (Sulpicians). With M de la dauversière he also founded the Society of Notre-Dame of Montreal, which, beginning in 1642, sent Sulpicians and colonists to Canada. Olier's writings express a spirituality that is at once severe and warm and, after that of pierre de bérulle, exercised a profound influence on the formation of French clergy (La Journée chrétienne, 1665; Catéchisme chrétien pour la vie intérieure, 1656; Introduction à la vie et aux vertus chrétiennes, 1657).
